About the Plate

With nearly 2,000 people currently waiting for an organ transplant in Colorado, save lives today by registering to be an organ and tissue donor at DonateLifeColorado.org or the next time you receive or renew your driver’s license.

On behalf of Donate Life Colorado, the state’s organ and tissue donor registry, we are pleased to announce the creation of Colorado’s new specialty Donate Life license plate.

This effort was accomplished thanks to the 4,000 people who signed the American Transplant Foundation’s petition, enabling the license plate to be introduced in the Colorado General Assembly. The plate will become available for purchase on January 1, 2010 at Title and Registration Offices throughout the state of Colorado.

About the plate

Beginning January 1st, the law will require that a minimum of 3,000 Donate Life plates be in circulation by July 1, 2013. In order to meet this requirement, we are encouraging Colorado’s transplant-related organizations, community, volunteers and those who have been impacted by organ and tissue donation to assist in promoting the plate by purchasing one for your vehicle.

What does it cost?

The plate can be purchased for a one-time $50 fee at any time of year and does not need to coincide with registration renewal. (I.e. Unless your registration is due for renewal, you will only be charged $50 to get the plate.) Funds generated from plate sales will go back to the State of Colorado. $25 will be contributed to the Highway Users Tax Fund and $25 will go towards the Licensing Services Cash Fund.

Where do I go for more information?

After January 1st, 2010, you will be able to locate additional information about the Donate Life license plate, by visiting the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Web site

Other donation-related organizations will also provide this specialty license plate information on their Web sites:

  2. IS THE DONATE LIFE TAG AVAILABLE IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI? I LIVE IN JASPER COUNTY. MISSISSIPPI

    • Unfortunately, Mississippi does not have a Donate Life license plate at this time. We recommend contacting the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency and telling them of your interest in creating a plate for your state: http://www.msora.org/contactinfo.htm.

      Thank you for your question!
